Migrant workers around Industrial areas in GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation) Vatva, Ahmedabad face a lot of health issues, due to hazardous working conditions and high-risk sexual behavior with multiple partners. The relative freedom at the new place, increased exposure to high-risk sex, peer pressure, consumption of alcohol and limited means of entertainment add to the risk and vulnerability to HIV and other communicable diseases. HIV AIDS, TB, STD, Hypertension, Stress are the key issues which are common in-migrant workers and some of the blood and air-borne diseases are easily transferable to the spouse and children. Diseases like HIV, STD/STI and TB have strong social stigma where not just the actual patient but the whole family suffers from economic uncertainty and social disharmony.
Under National AIDS Control Program (NACP), we are providing various health services to migrant workers in and around Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), at Vatva Ahmedabad. As a process, we do the risk profiling of migrant workers and contact them through interpersonal communication (IPC), Group meeting, Mega Health Camps. We also educate and sensitize factory owners towards the patients of HIV and TB. TI Program provides referral services, condom distribution, counselling and medicine/treatment support to positive patients as well as potential victims of HIV AIDS, STI or TB.
