# Adult Literacy

Literacy is the founding pillar of education and one of the most fundamental skills required to lead a basic life with dignity in today world. But unfortunately, 25% India population is still illiterate, primarily women in tribal and rural areas. These people are easy prey for exploitation, do not get rightful benefits and end up living a dark life in low confidence.
Various private and government agencies conduct adult literacy classes but geographical constrains, lack of felt need, migration, social and gender biases and age are biggest blockage to mobilize people to attend the literacy programs.

Intervention

Literacy as a Service Programme (LaaS), is a flagship program of TCS to improve adult literacy. The program uses a combination of methods like computer software, primer books, Prerak (teacher) assistance make women read, write and calculate in 3 months of time. We cater to women from age 15-50 years, living in tribal and rural areas of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Program emphasis to leverage literacy as a basic skill to empower women to build their confidence, sense of pride, rightful entitlement and help them to raise income and safety from financial frauds.
